I want to be the first to confess that I never feel like I pray enough or in the right way. I have been constantly conditioned to think of prayer in a certain way. In my usual picture of prayer, I do a lot of speaking and God does a lot of listening. I tell God things that he already knows and ask for my life to be easy. I try to refine the words in my head before I “officially” present them to God (yeah, right). I’m afraid to expect to much but feel guilty when I don’t expect enough.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? I hope not. I hope I’m the only one who struggles with consistency in prayer.   But I’m afraid I’m probably not. That’s why during the season of Lent, we’re going to be talking about and practicing prayer together. I’m going to be doing a sermon series called “Mythbusters: Prayer” starting February 21, 2010, which will be tackling some of the myths about prayer that keep us from getting closer to God in prayer. We’re also going to be asking each of our Deeper groups to do a 6 week study on prayer during Lent. If you’re not currently in a Deeper group but would like to be a part of this study, contact me and we’ll help you find a temporary group for the study. Who knows, you might like it enough to join the group even after the study is over.

So invite a friend and join us on a prayer journey, as we bust the myths that keep us from praying and strengthening our relationship with God. I PRAY you’ll be glad you did J.

FYI, each week, I plan to post a new blog going into more depth about some of the prayer myths or maybe even adding some that we won't have time to tackle in the service.  So check back here each week for more thoughts and mythbusting.
